Stage 01
What is going on
A short history of the complaint: how long, and what makes it worse.

Hands-on work for a specific complaint, not a spa hour.
Medical Massage
A medical massage starts from a problem: a stiff neck that will not turn, a lower back that locks up after sitting, shoulders that have been up by your ears for a month. It is aimed, firmer than a relaxation massage, and it has a reason behind each thing it does.
It is honest about its limits too. Massage is very good at settling muscular pain and stiffness. It does not fix a problem that is structural, and it does not replace the strength work that keeps the problem from returning.
Aimed at a complaintYou say what hurts; the session goes there.
Firmer, with a reasonNot an hour of generic strokes.
Paired with adviceWhat to do between sessions, so it holds.
Referred on when neededIf it needs a doctor or physiotherapy, you are told.
How it is staged
Each stage ends with a decision point — nothing moves forward on autopilot.
Stage 01
A short history of the complaint: how long, and what makes it worse.
Stage 02
Focused work on the area, and on whatever around it is contributing, at a pressure you set.
Stage 03
A couple of things to do between sessions — the part that makes it last.
Why it is done this way
The session follows the complaint.
Massage settles muscular pain; it does not fix everything.
The between-sessions part is where it holds.
Stiff and sore
Moving freely

Start to review
Every stage is recorded — vocabulary, sentence length, intelligibility, measurements and, where you have them, blood results. You see your own numbers next to where you started, which beats being told it is going well.
Questions
It starts from a specific complaint, it is usually firmer and more focused, and it comes with advice for between sessions. A relaxation massage is a perfectly good thing; it is just a different thing.
Firm, sometimes tender, but not something you have to brace through. Pressure is set by you. Pain is information, not a target.
For an acute complaint, often weekly for a short run, then spaced out. Ongoing maintenance is a choice, not a requirement.
Pain after a fall or accident, numbness, pins and needles, weakness, unexplained weight loss, fever, or pain that wakes you at night. Those need a medical opinion first.
